General Information

South East European Youth Network is the regional peace network that gathers 22 organizations from 12 countries and was established in December of 1999 as a one of 10 regional initiatives supported by Danish MFA through FRESTA program. This happened just 5 months after the NATO bombing and end of the Kosovo war, or just 4 years after the Dayton Agreement when Bosnian war finished as well as during the post-communism time transition period which was/is traumatic for the SEE societies. This meant that being a young person in the Balkans in ‘99 was not exciting as it was in other part of Europe. It meant that you most probably were living in closed nationally-framed groups in your own country with high degree xenophobia and hate speech that surround you, where it was not acceptable to step out of those circles and ask yourself who do you live with and who your neighbours are. At least not in public! We at SEEYN were lucky to have brave young people gathered in the network, who, even though in their early twenties, wanted to confront existing social patterns and cross the ethnical and country borders. It was not an easy journey for them! They had to confront their families, neighbours, friends, community they live in, as well as trust in themselves and those across the border that they are doing the right thing. SEEYN people, who have always been committed, passionate about change, hardworking and “mad” (make a difference) enough to make an important step forward for this region, are the main reason why today we are still here after 20 years of work.
